Both ends are 1/4in male NPT and tapered, so each joint tightens as it is driven and seals on the thread flanks - one fitting, two dry connections, and nothing in between to work loose against vibration.

The brass body resists the condensate, compressor oil carryover and road salt that live inside a heavy-duty air system, and it will not gall or rust into the components at either end - which matters on a nipple, because it is buried between two parts and both of them have to come apart eventually. The hex in the middle gives a wrench somewhere to bite, so the nipple can be torqued properly instead of being turned by whatever it is screwed into. It also carries forward the older Automann 177.9042 reference.
